£36

ST. VINCENT postmark/cancel
A/AP 8 82 on 1881 QV 4d bright blue (SG.38, Cat.£120). Ex DUGGLEBY
£60

The VINCENT DUGGLEBY "The G.P.O. Cancellations" mounted on his album pages. Price £15
(WIP-284) being the balance of this collection on 30 album pages (some better pages removed) with 226 illustrated items comprising GB/40c (3 pages), various types "A10" in black or red (7 pages), ST. VINCENT cds (6 pages), Kingstown cds in red ink (2 pages), Kingstown in black ink (7 pages), G.P.O. cds (3 pages), miscellaneous (2 pages) with LATE FEE and a re-construction of the 4-line "RECEIVED/GOVT. OFFICE/ST. VINCENT/JAN 18 1900" as old QV stocks were withdrawn from sale 31 December 1899 and seemingly sent to the Treasury for cancellation and most subsequently destroyed. Price £15 (no trade or collector discounts) payable by PayPal or UK bank transfer (note that Barclays Bank account is closed). A useful record sometimes showing how difficult it is to get a good strike on certain issues. (Note: on Page 2 the first with GB/40c does not have REVERSED CA wmk and is SG.48a and not SG.48, and on the worn GB/40c page the lower right mixed ink is not SG.43 but a re-perforated SG.38 as it has upr. small star wmk!)
£15

RECEIVED GOVT. OFFICE ST. VINCENT JAN 13 1900 and JAN 18 1900
a reconstruction using the QV 1/- orange (SG.58,58a) showing the full framed 4-line "RECEIVED GOVT. OFFICE ST. VINCENT JAN 13 1900" (two dates 13 and 18). Ex DUGGLEBY
Remaining stocks of the old QV stamps were withdrawn from sale on 31 December 1899. It seems they were sent to the Treasury for cancellation. Most were subsequently destroyed.
£40

Perkins Bacon 1881 QV 1d drab LARGEST MINT MULTIPLE
A delightful well-centred top left corner marginal pair clearly showing the small star upright watermark of the Perkins Bacon 1881 QV 1d drab (SG.37, Cat.£1300), fresh colour (light shade, almost grey as per PML handbook Page 59) and mounted only in the margins. An exhibition item.
The Pierce, Messenger, Robson Lowe handbook (PML) on page 59 confirms a mint pair being the largest known multiples with examples in the Gilbert Lodge collection and the Royal collection (the bluish line shows my scanner needs replacing!)
£900

"RETALIATORY RATE" (JY to DE 1848) - UNIQUE FROM BARBADOS
From May 1848 R.M.S.P. steamers travelled from the British West Indies to New York (the service ended January 1850 (21 round trips) - this complete entire with BARBADOES NO 22 1848 dbl-arc prepaid 2/- to William P. Hinds, Philadelphia arrived NEW YORK/SHIP/DEC 11 and was given a blue ink retaliatory rate charge of "58" (double 24c plus 10c = 58 cents). A unique exhibition item (written up BCPSG Journal June 1992).
USA RETALIATORY RATE OF 1848 - During the period of 1847, usual practice was to prepay only U.S. internal postage on overseas letters, e.g. 5¢ under 300 and 10¢ over 300 miles, except from California. Letters sent via British Cunard liners were charged the British rate of 24¢ in addition, while the U.S. Ocean Line charged 24¢ from New York, adding the 5¢ or 10¢ if posted elsewhere. Until 1849 England did not accept prepayment via the Ocean Line and charged again (discriminatory rate). The U.S. retaliated in 1848 and doubled the charge on prepaid Cunard letters (retaliatory rate).
