1880 mourning cover to Sir. Thomas Hare, Stow Hall (2nd Baronet 1807-1880), Downham Market, Norfolk with GB QV 2½d blue Plate 17 tied Gibraltar duplex dated A/MR 21 08 (year error), backstamped superb Downham A/MR 26 60 cds, small faults.
Early use of the "08" year error and early use GB QV 2½d blue Plate 17 as issued in Great Britain FE 5 1880.

C used CONSTANTINOPLE, GB used abroad postal history
1875 cover with summer use "via Varna" to Maidenhead, Berkshire with GB QV 4d Plate 14 pmk'd "C" and signed "T. F. Hughes" lower left, reverse circled H.B.M.E.C handstamp and red Constantinople JU 23 1875/A datestamp (7 days prior change to 2½d rate with JY 1 1875 joining of the U.P.U.).
Thomas Fiott Hughes (1825-87), Oriental Secretary at Constantinople from 1859 was regarded by Ambassador to Constantinople Sir Henry Elliott as "perfectly useless". After Hughes' retirement in 1875 the post was abolished.

1889 Colonial Secretary's Office printed circular requesting George Tenland of May Pen to attend a meeting of the Exhibition Commissioners posted with ON SERVICE/FREE/COLONIAL SECRETARY cachet supported by Kingston DE 28 89 sqc with MAY PEN same day arrival cds, the paper with curious crowned head watermark which has been seen on preparation sheet 1866 Montserrat revenue stamp issue, and envelope stock paper posted Tasmania NO 22 1867.

A DE 3 1885 cover to Hechler/Halifax, Nova Scotia carried S.S. Beta with QV 1d strip of three tied K3a "4" was estimated £4/500 in Ludington sale and realised £920

BARBADOS postal history
1882 use QV 1½d red-brown Post Card "per Zoe" to London with design pmk'd open bootheel duplex dated A/FE 1 82, landed with red SHIP-LETTER/A/PAID/FE 20 82/LONDON cds. Soiling and with pieces paper obscuring parts of reverse text.
Mail landed by private ship from Barbados to UK ports is rarely met for the later period. During period 1865 to 1886 only six entires are recorded as such, one landing Dover, five landing London.

T.18 used Princes Town, Trinidad postal history
1883 use of GB QV 1½d Post Card pmk'd Birmingham JA 31 83 sqc to Mrs Cleaver, Savannah Grande, Trinidad with "T.18" arrival duplex dated C/FE 24 83 on address panel.
On JA 20 1880 Princes Albert and George (later KGV) disembarked ship at San Fernando and took the Cipero Tramway to the town named The Mission Of Savannah Grande, where they planted two pooi trees in the St. Stephens Anglican Church compound, on their way to visit the Devils' Woodyard (famous mud volcano which first erupted 1852) near Indian Walk. To commemorate this event Savannah Grande was re-named Princes Town on FE 18 1880.

FIRST ANNUAL HORSE RACING AT CEDROS, Trinidad social and postal history
1884 use of the QV 2d blue Post Card (for India and Countries in the Far East via UK) to Hampstead, London pmk'd "T.21" duplex dated C/SP 25 84 (Type 0.9, used Cedros). Writer says he has written "giving an account of the Races" and that he saw Luther "at the Races" with mention of Palmcole Estate.
Cedros, one of the most isolated areas in Trinidad, had little in the social calendar. In 1884, some of the colonial officials and larger planters of the area joined to hold a series of races at Columbus Bay, the sands being firm enough for their purpose. The event, which came off on September 18, was held under the patronage of the Governor, Sir F.B. Barlee. He came down for the occasion along with many guests aboard the island steamer. It was then an annual event, being held on New Year's Day, thereafter. The last races were held in 1950.

1888 cover with 10 CENTS on QV 4d mauve (SG.40) to Berlin, Germany pmk'd "O" obliterator in combination with BELIZE/JY 9 88 cds.
This stamp has a normal 9 months short life pmk’d “O” obliterator in combination with BELIZE/date cds (Proud D6 recorded MR 20 88 to MR 12 89, this being the earliest cover dated JY 9 88). The stamp has a longer life pmk’d “O” obliterator in combination with BELIZE cds (D7) from AP 18 89 until replaced by the 6c rate in March 1891.

LATE RE-INTRODUCTION OF THE QV 1d CARMINE, Bahamas postal history
1911 cover to Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada with 1890 QV 1d (SG.49) pmk'd TARPUM-BAY (T.1) dated C/OC 20 11, this currently a unique cover with re-introduced use of the QV 1d during the KGV reign (KE7 having been monarch period JA 22 1901 - MY 6 1910).
The late uses of the QV 1d are currently confined to the period MY 20 11 to JA 28 12. Examples are far from common but are recorded for Bimini, Clarence Town L.I., Deadman's Cay, Fresh Creek, George Town (LRD), Green Turtle Cay, Inagua, Mangrove Cay, Mastic Point, Nicholls-Town, Rock Sound, Rum Cay, Spanish Wells (ERD), Tarpum-Bay, "The Bight", Watlings

Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick William Nicholas McCracken KCB, DSO (1859-1949) of the Royal Berkshire Regiment resided at Banyan, The Garrison, Barbados where he was Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General (DAAG) 1892-97.
