F87 used SMYRNA, British Levant postal history
1883 cover to Thomas Stephenson, Glen Caladh by Greenock with GB QV 2½d tied "F87" with Smyrna B/DE 15 83 cds alongside, b/stamped Greenock DE 25 83.
Glen Caladh Castle had a number of owners including George Stephenson (1781-1848), nephew of the famous engineer and designer of the steam locomotive Rocket. During World War II the castle, situated on the western shores of Loch Riddon north of the Isle of Bute, was requestioned as a training establishment by Combined Operations becoming the Beach Pilotage School 1942-45, and designated H.M.S James Cook, a reference to the advancing navigation skills that the founder of Australia introduced into the Royal Navy, and reflected the task of operators of troop landing craft and their cargoes, and tank landing operations. The property was demolished in 1960, having been rendered unsafe by dry rot.

one of those wonderfully distressed fragile cover fronts with adhesive missing which would have been a fine exhibition item with creased GB QV 4d despatched B/MALTA/JA 20 73 to Henry Bevan, 95th Regiment, Aldershot, Farnham, England with FARNBORO STATION D/JA 29 73 forwarded Athlone, Ireland showing C/WICKLOW/FE 3 73 and DUBLIN FE 4 73 with manuscript "Not Known" added prior return to FARNBORO STATION D/FE 5 73 collecting handstruck "1d" due.

MALTA with chisel slits to Genoa, ITALY postal history
1865 part contents wrapper to Genoa, Italy with GB QV 4d tied MALTA "A25" duplex dated A/JY 26 65 with boxed PIROSCAFI/POSTALI/ITALIANI and disinfected by two chisel slits.
Other 1865 entires with chisel slits are recorded for OC 17 65 to Catania, OC 31 65 to Corfu, NO 14 65 to Tunis, NO 21 65 to Genoa, Italy, NO 23 65 to Messina, Sicily.

MALTA to ITALY chisel slit due cholera outbreak
1883 cover to Reggio de Calabria (Southern Italy) with two pair plus single Great Britain QV ½d pale green (SG.Z90) tied Malta "A25" duplex dated B/DE 6 83 showing single chisel slit on address panel, reverse 8 12 80 arrival, cover opened at both base and right edges.
Chisel slits were applied due to a cholera outbreak in Southern Italy. Covers with such chisel slits have been noted on Malta outgoing entires for JY 4, JY 8, JY 29, AU 5, AU 12, NO 24, DE 6 1883.

ERYNAUD & CO, MALTA sender's cachet marked "via Marseilles by French Steamer" to New York, USA (the recipient's name cut out) with GB QV 6d Plate 8 pmk'd B/MALTA/AP 7 69 "A25" duplex with 2-line "PAID-ONLY/TO ENGLAND" with blue crayon "8 cts" changed "13" in black, New York APR 27 alongside address panel with red London NN/AP 13 69 transit on reverse. Ex LLOYD-LOWLES, CAMILLERY.

A UNIQUE FRANKING TO JAMAICA combination cover with Peru 1868-72 1d green, GB QV 6d pale buff (assumed Plate 11), GB QV 1/- green Plate 6 (SG.Z43, Z53) tied Callao "C38" cancels addressed John Small, Port Maria, Jamaica with 3-line PANAMA/3 AP 1873/TRANSIT plus pencilled "2" on face, b/stamped A/CALLAO/MR 26 73, Kingston IIIA/AP 8 73 and Port Maria C/AP 9 73 cds. Cover soiled with peripheral base tear and GB QV 6d with pale colour.
This Peru 1 dinero was cancelled "C38" from stocks held at the British Packet Agencies to comply with the tax on all outgoing mail.

1877 mourning cover with content to Mrs. H. Lee Wilson, Lancaster Gate, London with GB QV 2½d rosy-mauve Plate 9 tied "F87" with SMYRNA A/DE 14 77 cds alongside, reverse red PADDINGTON Z/DE 20 77 arrival. Part letter, one sheet, enclosed which talks about a walk around the town, mention of the Roman, Saxon, Norman remains, and of the stone coffins containing glass and jewellery excavated whilst building the new railway stations.
