(WIP-284) being the balance of this collection on 30 album pages (some better pages removed) with 226 illustrated items comprising GB/40c (3 pages), various types "A10" in black or red (7 pages), ST. VINCENT cds (6 pages), Kingstown cds in red ink (2 pages), Kingstown in black ink (7 pages), G.P.O. cds (3 pages), miscellaneous (2 pages) with LATE FEE and a re-construction of the 4-line "RECEIVED/GOVT. OFFICE/ST. VINCENT/JAN 18 1900" as old QV stocks were withdrawn from sale 31 December 1899 and seemingly sent to the Treasury for cancellation and most subsequently destroyed. Price £15 (no trade or collector discounts) payable by PayPal or UK bank transfer (note that Barclays Bank account is closed). A useful record sometimes showing how difficult it is to get a good strike on certain issues. (Note: on Page 2 the first with GB/40c does not have REVERSED CA wmk and is SG.48a and not SG.48).

Perkins Bacon 1881 QV 1d drab LARGEST MINT MULTIPLE
A delightful well-centred top left corner marginal pair clearly showing the small star upright watermark of the Perkins Bacon 1881 QV 1d drab (SG.37, Cat.£1300), fresh colour and mounted only in the margins. An exhibition item.
The Pierce, Messenger, Robson Lowe handbook (PML) on page 59 confirms a mint pair being the largest known multiples with examples in the Gilbert Lodge collection and the Royal collection (the bluish line shows my scanner needs replacing!)

"RETALIATORY RATE" (JY to DE 1848) - UNIQUE FROM BARBADOS
From May 1848 R.M.S.P. steamers travelled from the British West Indies to New York (the service ended January 1850 (21 round trips) - this complete entire with BARBADOES NO 22 1848 dbl-arc prepaid 2/- to William P. Hinds, Philadelphia arrived NEW YORK/SHIP/DEC 11 and was given a blue ink retaliatory rate charge of "58" (double 24c plus 10c = 58 cents). A unique exhibition item (written up BCPSG Journal June 1992).
USA RETALIATORY RATE OF 1848 - During the period of 1847, usual practice was to prepay only U.S. internal postage on overseas letters, e.g. 5¢ under 300 and 10¢ over 300 miles, except from California. Letters sent via British Cunard liners were charged the British rate of 24¢ in addition, while the U.S. Ocean Line charged 24¢ from New York, adding the 5¢ or 10¢ if posted elsewhere. Until 1849 England did not accept prepayment via the Ocean Line and charged again (discriminatory rate). The U.S. retaliated in 1848 and doubled the charge on prepaid Cunard letters (retaliatory rate).

ST.LUCIA - ILLUSTRATED PRE-STAMP AND GB used PERIOD 1779-1860. Price £24
(WIP-202) I wonder what the financial outlay would be to own all the stamp catalogues ever produced, and how many years it would take to harness all the illustrated pre-stamp and QV covers, plus the dated information (of non-illustrated items) in the most famous of the early named Sales. Even on the easiest flowing days harnessing 50 scans is tough going and exhausting (50 x 365 = 18,250) and my current scan total is 92,922. St. Lucia pre-stamp shows how the island was very much influenced by the French and unlike other British Islands entires are found from Martinique travelling through Castries to FRENCH PORTS. Also there are those travelling through from Antigua and Tortola. Handstamps employed are the ST. LUCIA fleuron, the double arc, and the PAID AT ST. LUCIA, not forgetting the elusive SOUFRIERE dbl-arc. The scarcity turns to great rarity with very few GB used in going to Barbados, Bordeaux, and London. Many of the 81 illustrated items are part or full in b/w, arranged in chronological sequence with provenance attributed when known. This digital pdf can be yours for £24 arriving in minutes once ordered (no trade or collector discounts). Payable by PayPal or UK bank transfer (note Barclays Bank account is closed). Successful buyers can request two free updates as and when required

BARBADOS - the unique PRE-PREPARATION BY VERTICAL SCISSOR-CUT STRIP OF THREE
First awareness of this practice, for easy separation, was noticed on 1858 imperforate horiz. pair 6d pale rose-red (SG.11) ex Sir James Marshall (1947 auction catalogue) clearly showing vertical 90% full scissor separation on FE 15 1860 cover to Samuel Barber, London (written-up BWISC Bulletin No.271, December 2021). The article was subsequently followed up as it was found that the wrapper was docketted "Demerary 9 Feby 60" and smuggled to Barbados for posting (as no outgoing British Guiana markings). This amazing horizontal strip of three imperforate 1858 1/- brown-black (SG.12, Cat.£330) has somehow managed to survive as the two right stamps were just barely overlapping when affixed to cover and now supported by small hinges, cancelled Bridgetown bootheel "1" (the bootheels despatched from the GPO London April 10 1863).
The 1/- in black was needed to meet the AP 1 1863 increase from 6d to 1/- per half ounce rate, the bootheels sent out AP 10 1863, and the 1/- ERROR OF COLOUR in BLUE sent out from Perkins Bacon on AP 28 1863. The replacement perforated 1/- black was invoiced OC 29 1863
