The Middle Quarters office was opened during May 1876 and the A.82 (Type M) numeral stated to have been sent during 1876. Kingston Jamaica 24th June 1854" pmk'd KINGSTON-JAMAICA JY 11 1854 dbl-arc to John Mathie, Stirling, North Britain rated manuscript "6" unpaid confirmed with handstruck "6d" which appears to be in matching ink colour. Red JY 31 1854 (applied London) and red circled M/NR (Morning, Northern Railway applied London) and STIRLING AU 1 1854 in paler black ink. Currently the only known example. The new 6d rate per half ounce was introduced MR 23 1854. Three experts on UK postal history have been approached and their combined opinion is that the handstruck "6d" is not a British handstamp, and therefore most probably applied at Jamaica (a similar handstruck "6" is known on two ingoing unpaid Barbados entires) £725 |

;) | JAMAICA USED AT BRITISH POST OFFICES ABROAD The currently unique trio of “C51” (used St. Thomas) on QV 1d Pine wmk, the unrecorded on GB used abroad “D60” (whereabouts of use unknown, RPS certificate) on QV 6d Pine wmk, and “E88” (used Colon) on QV 2d CC wmk. Similar to the accepted use of Trinidad stamps at Ciudad Bolivar, it is now thought that Jamaica stamps may have had permitted or accepted use on correspondence back to the island – see Foster Page 31. ;) ;) ;) ;) | JAMAICA(-PAID), Jamaica postmark (10½mm high) assumed JAMAICA-PAID showing JA 24 on lower line (similarly to Proud PD14 recorded FE 8 1889 to AP 7 1897 but with square, rather than rounded, corners) together with KINGSTON, JAMAICA cds dated C/JA 24 76 on QV 1/- CC wmk (SG.13), horizontal bend and perf. faults. The later PD14 stampless covers are struck in red and have similar red crayon amount alongside. A single cover to UK dated NO 9 61 has QV 1/- for postage and QV 6d for late fee. Therefore it is plausible that a similar cover to the JU 5 76 known cover to Belize franked QV 6d could have had 6d postage plus 6d late fee and been paid with QV 1/- stamp. The handstamp would have acted like a Crowned Circle to distinguish as such rather than the letter read as double 6d rate. £48 |
